Obesity
Overweight
or obesity is a condition in which the body accumulates an excess of body
fat. Obesity is becoming more prevalent in many countries.
People of all ages can be obese although some studies show that the
percentage of obesity varies among different races.
The cause of
obesity is consuming more calories than the body uses. Obesity is
related to genetic factors, socioeconomic factors and developmental
factors. Genetic affects a person's body weight by about 33 percent.
People in higher socioeconomic groups are less likely to be obese than
those in lower socioeconomic groups, probably because they have more time
and resources for dieting and exercise. High number of fat cells in
the body also increases the likelihood of being obese. Hormonal
disorders, lack of physical exercise, brain damage and certain drugs can
also cause obesity.
Obesity is a
contributing factor in many medical conditions. Accumulation of
excess fat can put pressure on the lungs and the back, hips and knees,
causing difficulty in breathing and various orthopedic problems, including
back pain and osteoarthritis. Obese people have a higher risk of
injuries, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some
kinds of cancer.
There are
many weight loss programs in the market these days but many people who
lose weight often put it back later. A long term commitment to a
healthy diet and nutritional supplementation is needed for successful
weight control.
